Message from The Commodore

Whilst it is unusual for me to write in this manner, there are a few points that I am keen to bring to Members attention.

HIGH TIDE

On Monday evening, the Club experienced what we believe to be the highest tide ever 5.75m around midnight. This caused one of the pontoons to be lifted just above the top of the pile which secured it in position. It required a Herculean effort by Stewart, Rob and Jake to keep the pontoon in position, and to make sure it was properly fitted to the pile as the tide receded. If this action had not been undertaken then untold damage could have occurred to boats in the marina. The marina team, Brian and Aurora Allen (Committee Member) were supporting this activity until around 0200. On behalf of all Members, and especially Berthholders, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all.

ROYAL VISIT

It has recently been announced that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, the Clubs Patron, will visit the Club on the morning of Thursday 23 May to celebrate the Clubs 60th Anniversary and to formally open the Army Offshore Sailing Centre. This event will be a true Celebration of Services Sailing with the involvement of Hornet Members and Staff, JSASTC and the Service Sailing Associations. Details of other anniversary events have been advertised and are detailed on the website.

60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION DINNER

This Saturday marks the start of the Clubs 60th Anniversary Celebrations with a formal dinner at the Clubhouse. The event starts with pre-dinner drinks at 1830 and call for dinner at 1920. Rig for the event is Black Tie, Uniform or Lounge Suit (with medals) and the equivalent for ladies (long, cocktail or trousers are all acceptable). Our Guest of Honour is the Club Admiral, General Gwyn Jenkins CB OBE ADC. Given the formality of the event, we will follow, as far as possible, protocol for formal Service dinners.

Tipping of HSSC Employees

Following on from last weeks comments on staff tipping at HSSC. Upon reflection the practice of tipping is to return to normal practices. That is; tipping is not required and members will have the opportunity at the end of the year to make a voluntary donation to the staff fund.

I do apologise for confusing the matter and hope this is now resolved.

Marina

Rounds of FB3 boat yard have recently been carried out and highlighted the following issues:

Ladders: All ladders are required to be securely fastened to boats and locked in placed if left attached to boats in your absence. This prevents loss and misuse of the ladders.

Gash: Gash and other disposable items have been left under and around a small number of boats. This practice should stop immediately. Bins are provided around the site  for members use.

Unidentified Trailers / Ribs / Small Boats: A number of trailers and small boats have been listed, some of which have been in situ for a long time. If you have any items stored on FB3 that is not easily identifiable would you please let me know.  Efforts are underway to identify the owners and I will update you in due course.

HORNET NEEDS YOU!.............

We are still looking for some volunteers to help with the following events:   Waterloo Night 15th June someone to preside over the evening a chance for the Army to step up and celebrate their formal evening.   Families Fun Day 10th August people to help set up and run some of the kids events It would also be good if some of the members that have children could help to devise some events and help out on the day. This has been a brilliant event in the past and it would be a shame to have to cancel if we cannot get the support.   The response to the members questionnaire we sent out last year asked for a selection of different types of events and more family orientated ones too. We are trying to do this, but we can only put on these events with members and associate members offering to help.    If you would be interested, please contact Tania at tania.anderson@hornetservicessailing.org.uk or speak to someone in the Office.
